art and craft....

One of the wonderful gifts of having children around is the amazing craft they make for you. Over the years we have been privileged enough to receive some fantastic artworks, the complete freedom of creating through a child's eye allows for the most delightful creations just as they see it or hear it. The tapestries were made whilst listening to the school teacher tell stories and the elephants were stitched whilst studying India in class. "Pip" on the other hand was not thinking at all about what he was creating nor how he was going to dis-entagle himself.
Little Sparrow has felt, threads and pattern books for making elephants and tapestry wool and hessian for creating beautiful pictures. Little Sparrow does not endorse the sale of white dogs who like to craft!

it's been a 'boy's' week...

"the special relationship between a child and his/her doll is dynamic and often mysterious, as relationships are. It is about love and nurturing, friendship and ownership, the emergence of self, and the subtle expression of all that the child imbibes from the adults who surround them. It is a personal, private,  often intuitive, and as old as the first doll that ever found intself in the hands of as child"
- Maricristin Sealey,
Author of "Making Waldorf Dolls"

These little blokes left for their new homes yesterday for some adventures and lots of love from their new human friends...i just love it especially when i'm thanked like this......

"Dear Shelley,
Thank-you so much for the beautiful doll you have made for my son. I received him yesterday, and am so excited to give it to him on his birthday.
He is just so wonderful and capture's my little boy's essence so well. I just know he will love him and take great care of him.
Thank-you so much for sharing your spirit in these wonderful dolls you make. I couldn't have imagined anything more perfect.
Kind regards, Fiona"

making transparent Stars.....

http://harvestmoonbyhand.blogspot.com
Aren't they beautiful?
these one's shown are made by Ann Rinkenberger in Minnesota, she homeschool's her two daughters and really is quite the master at making these origami stars.
They are easy to make as far as folding goes but being precise is always helpful!!! (i need to slow down!) They are created by folding single pieces of transparent kite paper into single star point and then assembling them into many different kinds of stars.
The kids love making them too, we have made tehm into mobiles, magic wands, birthday and christmas decoration, actually making mini ones for the christmas tree is a family favourite!
There are some great books in the shop that teach you everything you need to know or you can pop over to Anne's Blog for some more inspiration!
Plus there is kite paper too, it is stronger than tissue paper and really great for making these stars and rossettes.
$25.95                                       $37.95
$35.00 x 100 sheets

natural toys for a good days play

Natural blocks are always a good staple favourite in the kids play space.....they can be made into anything...anything at all!

Add a few Trees with birds in them,
a Star House and some bridges and tunnels and you have the basis of literally hours of play.

I used to love reading a book and see what the kids created from the story, with a few simple toys and the freedom to explore the creative playscape was always a wonderland!

A Bags of natural blocks $36.50
Tree $21.00
Books from $9.95
Star, Sun or Moon House $77.00

kids can make things too..

$37.99 the softies kit...instructions and tools for making 15 plush pals
$29.95 ...a second book by Bonnie Gosse and Jill Atherton
$7.50 pair hand crafted knitting knitters for the kids to learn with
$6.50 50g ball 16ply wool for little fingers
When i think back to some of the projects my kids tackled when they were younger i feel very proud and also quite amazed. They say kids learn things must faster and with less anxiety than we adults and i thinks this is quite true.
My daughter would make little dolls out of all the scraps of fabric i had lying around and my son could crochet up a storm from a full size backpack to dolly's blankets for the shop, neither of them liked using patterns and the free-form approach to making allowed for some incredibly unique and functional creations!
I still wear my scarf and hat and Charley-lois' first little doll sits next to my bed!

There are some wonderful kits in the shop and a spread of natural supplies for hours of "making", there are many ideas in my head to that i'm happy to share with you so you can 'get down and get making " with your kids too!

and don't forget about the giveaway!

cuddles for you?

and another leaves the fold....
i have been rather busy making this dolly to head interstate and today she's leaving.

These larger dolls are such a commitment and their size means they almost become one of the kids once finished. I love making them!
This sweety has the most lovely soft hair, a merino/alpaca blend form Mansfield, a pleasure to work with and will surely make some mighty fine pigtails and plaits!
Button jointing dolls and toys is a terrific way to add a bit of action, it's very cute seeing this one sit up "all by herself" and with arms up... reach out to you!

So off to the post office i go... a little sad cos i'll miss her but also very happy she is going to a little girl who will love her for a very long time! x

books of craftiness!

Just spent the last hour and a half unpacking some lovely new crafty books for the shelves......the whole job should really have only taken me about 15 mins, but so many wonderful pictures and projects to do!!!??

This one "SEE and SEW, a sewing book for children" is fantastic. Written by Tina Davis and published 2006 by Stewart, Tabori and Chang.

A delightfully presented book of first sewing, covering all the basics for children at the beginning of their sewing adventure.

"This book is an invitation to sew. No single book can teach you everything there is to know about sewing. There are soe things about sewing that you will need to discover for yourself. But this book can give you a good start by showing you what some of the possibilities are...."

$32.99 in the shop now.

On the shelf also are some more books on Softie creation, needlefelting, knitting toys, sewing for the home,
including the beautiful "Handmade Home" by Amanda Blake Soule, the author of "The Creative Family"..... 30 sewing projects, "simple ways to repurpose old materials into new family treasures"
$46.99 in the shop now
